JUST IN: Big Ghanaian team set to sign Obeng Junior after contract expiration

Kwadwo Obeng Junior, following the conclusion of his contract with Hearts of Oak, is now a free agent and could potentially make a move during the upcoming summer transfer window.

On June 6, Obeng Junior’s contract officially expired, leading to speculation about his departure from the club on a free transfer. Reports indicate that Hearts of Oak is unlikely to offer the striker a new contract as part of their efforts to rebuild and revitalize the team after a disappointing season, where they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day.

The 23-year-old, who recently celebrated his wedding, has been linked with a potential move to an undisclosed European club. Obeng Junior initially joined Hearts of Oak in April 2018, making a significant impact during the team’s successful FA Cup campaign in the previous season, reaching the quarter-finals.

Prior to joining Hearts of Oak, Obeng Junior had established himself as one of the most promising young talents in the Division One League. In the 2017 season, he impressed as one of the top strikers, scoring thirteen goals in the league and three goals in the Ghana FA Cup, including notable strikes against Steadfast FC and Asante Kotoko.

In 2020, Obeng Junior signed a three-year contract extension with Hearts of Oak. He concluded the 2020/21 season as the club’s leading scorer in all competitions, netting eleven goals in twenty-five matches, with ten of those goals coming in the league.

Despite his previous successes and contributions to the team’s Premier League and FA Cup triumphs, Obeng Junior has faced criticism and unfair treatment from some sections of the club’s fans due to a recent scoring drought. He managed to score three goals in the recently concluded campaign.

Confirming the news on Oyerepa FM on Wednesday morning, Obeng stated, “Yes, my contract has indeed come to an end, and now I’m considering my next steps. I will be discussing with my manager to explore the possibilities for my future, and I will follow whatever guidance he provides.”

When asked about his interest in continuing with Hearts of Oak, he expressed his lack of issues with the team and his willingness to sign a new deal should the club extend an offer.

“I am solely focused on my work, and I don’t have any problems with the club. So, whatever they decide, I have no issues. Although I have received offers from other clubs, I am currently considering Hearts of Oak and waiting to hear their plans.”
