Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane has surprisingly named Ghana as one of the teams he believes could be favorites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside Nigeria, Morocco, and other strong contenders.
While Senegal, Algeria, and Morocco have already secured their places in the competition, Ghana’s fate will be determined in September, as they faced a setback after a goalless draw against Madagascar in June during the fifth round of AFCON qualifiers.
Despite the challenges faced by Ghana, Sadio Mane, who led Senegal to AFCON victory in 2021, expressed confidence in Ghana’s potential to emerge as strong contenders in the upcoming tournament.
Acknowledging that the AFCON is renowned for its surprises, Mane highlighted the usual powerhouses such as the hosts Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Algeria, and Cameroon as teams to watch out for.
“The AFCON is full of surprises, but we know the usual best teams like the hosts, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Algeria, and Cameroon,” he stated, as quoted by Joueurs Cameroonais.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, has been eager to add another title to their collection since their last victory in 1982. However, they have faced disappointment in recent years, finishing as runners-up in 1992, 2010, and 2015, respectively.
